Community and Social Impact

Over 20,000 people arrived in Austin, Texas in early November for the 5th Annual AfroTech Conference, held from November 1-5. Founded in 2016 by Morgan DeBaun, the CEO and founder of Blavity Inc., AfroTech has quickly grown to become the largest Black tech conference in the country. Each year, AfroTech provides a space for Black professionals to showcase their talents, share knowledge, and connect with industry leaders. By bringing together a diverse range of voices and perspectives, the conference is committed to making the tech industry more inclusive.

In addition to promoting diversity and inclusion in tech, the workshops, panel discussions, and keynote speeches provide valuable insights and strategies needed to succeed in the tech field. 2023’s conference included speakers from companies such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Microsoft, and Disney discussing AI, Product Equity, DEI, and more.

“It was a way for us to curate a safe space for Black tech professionals to get to know us, have fun, and just be,” Nicole Lalwani, Principal Tech Recruiter at Remitly, says.

The Happy Hour offered a space for Black tech professionals to discuss their career development, Remitly’s culture, and network with one another. As Remitly continues to invest in creating inclusive workplaces, events like AfroTech reinforce the commitment to support and celebrate diversity in tech.
